What is the CNA and how often is it done? The Community Needs Assessment (CNA) is an in-depth study of the greater Sacramento region that identifies health priorities, health disparities and barriers to health care for vulnerable and underserved populations. Read more
The region's not-for-profit hospitals collaborate on the development of the CNA every three years. CNA findings provide valuable information used by the hospitals for planning and designing their community benefit health programs and services.

Where does the data come from? Both qualitative and quantitative data was collected for the 2010 CNA. The main sources of quantitative data were: Read more
Ca. Dept. of Public Health, GeoLytics, OSHPD, Thomson Reuters, and the U.S. Census. Qualitative data was gathered for the four counties assessed through a number of key informant interviews with public health personnel and twelve focus groups and one-on-one conversations with un- and under-insured individuals who shared their stories of the health issues they face and barriers to accessing health care. How is the CNA utilized by the health care systems? The CNA assists health care systems in developing community benefit programs and services that support those who need them most.

What is the CHVI? The Community Health Vulnerability Index (CHVI) is a composite indicator representing socio-economic barriers to health access for communities. Read more
It was created by scaling nine variables obtained from Thompson Reuters from 0 to 1. These were summed with equal weights and then ranked. A higher number ranking (in a total of 105) reflects those areas with the least modeled barriers, or less vulnerability. A lower number ranking indicates the areas with more modeled barriers, or higher vulnerability. Hide
